In less than 10 years, the United States will need 1.7 million more engineers and computing professionals.

We simply can’t afford to ignore the perspectives or the talent of half the population.

Problem

  1. Some teen girls underestimate their abilities in engineering and mathematics
  2. Some teen girls experience emotional problems; demoralization; low self-esteem
  3. Hard to find female role models in STEM field

HMW

How might we help girls overcome cultural bias and stereotypes to pursue STEM careers?

How might we continue to close the gender gap by supporting girls to pursue STEM careers?

How might we encourage girls to pursue STEM careers while giving educators information to adjust the curriculum?

Hypothesis

I believe that if I built an engaging game version of bias test or creative tool or mentoring product for teens questioning each other for unconscious gender bias, they will overcome their hidden bias, navigate gender and social barriers in STEM filed, and grow up healthy, educated, and independent.

Testing Assumptions

AR in Education
Perceive > Engage > Immerse > Self-directed Learning = Effective education

Hypothesis Prototype Proposal I

Augmented Reality Game for Training

Experiencing an immersive part of Augmented Reality is connecting students’ curiosity in engineering. AR games are one of the benefits for the student to see into the other dimensions that surround them. A couple of mini AR games supposes on <hello,w> to be an educational part and icebreaking part anytime the user wants to explore more about engineering fields. Based on AR quiz results, the system will match the data, and show the mentor list with similar aptitudes and majors to the students so that the students can explore more with objects/questions. Why is it beneficial for students? AR technology on mobile is useful not only for participative learning with distanced instruction with virtual elements but for the affordability. Since the effort for implementing the technology requires technical expertise, as well as financial costs. As of the moment, it is only available to large or financially capable organizations. Furthermore, it does not need any expensive additional devices.

Project STEM + X

Enhancing STEM education for young girls using Augmented Reality

  • Awaken curiosity towards STEM
  • Instant learning inside and outside of the classroom
  • Provide visualization for better understanding

More Ideations

  1. STEM career quiz
  2. Making A Poster With Motivated Elements Using Camera
  3. Experience Breaking Gender Bias in AR Classes
